The Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL), in cooperation with Pinas Forward, organized the webinar on “Kaka-Computer Mo ‘Yan: A Webinar on Raising the Digital Child” held via Zoom last September 3.
The webinar was conducted after PAMIL saw the need for parents and guardians to acquire competencies to help raise children in today’s digital society. Guest panelists included Dr. Hyacinth Manood, Medical Specialist of National Center for Mental Health and Dr. Michele Alignay, Psychology faculty of Miriam College. Mr. Marvin Olaes of College of Arts and Letters of University of the Philippines served as moderator.
Dr. Manood recognizes that even before the pandemic, excessive use of computers for games and social media was already a problem. However, increased of screen time use was even heightened as an alternative to activities like online classes online banking and shopping. But in the end, she presents a balanced viewpoint on computer use.
On family relationships, Dr. Alignay reminded the audience to recognize that technology is already here, however, life is supposed to be at the center and not technology even if in the digital age.
